My interest in books in general and artist books in particular are many. Portable by nature, as readers we develop an intimate and enduring bond with them. They suspend our sense of time and space and invite us into realms otherwise unimaginable.
This audio book evolved from a forty-five minute video installation that focused on the life of philosopher and mystic Simone Weil, whose unyielding commitment to human rights foregrounded all else, including her own life. It seems fitting that her thoughts and ideals, typified by self-sacrifice and asceticism, be presented in manner that transcends the material world in some small way.
The artist gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
